Packing Tips from a Seasoned Traveler | Ivan Lai
Published Tuesday, August 14th 2012 - Updated Tuesday, August 14th 2012Recently I booked a client on her first cruise to the Mediterranean. As her travel specialist, she asked me what she should pack. Of course, being prepared with the right items for your trip is important, and I shared an extensive checklist she could print from our Fun Cruises For You Web site.
But keep in mind the tools you use to pack, and how you organize your belongings is just as important as what you bring on your trip. Here are some quick tips on how to pack your important belongings to ensure they arrive safely at your destination.
Which items should go in my carry-on luggage?
There are particular items that you should carry on you at all times, and never place them in your checked luggage including: Passports and I.D.’s, medicine, cash, laptops, cameras, sentimental photos, and jewelry. While it’s true most airlines will reimburse you for lost luggage- there is a maximum amount you can claim. You also can’t place a value on sentimental items, so save yourself the hassle of reclaiming lost items.
What type of luggage is best for traveling?
Most people have black or dark colored luggage, so it’s best to choose brightly colored luggage that stands out. With two wheels and a soft case your luggage will easily fit and be flexible in the small baggage compartments. Unlike a hard case that can’t be repaired once it eventually cracks.
What are the long distance travel packing essentials?
If you plan on traveling long distance then you should always line the inside of your luggage with plastic. By taking this simple precaution you are prepared for changing weather conditions along your travel route. You don’t want to end up at your destination with a bag full of wet clothes. It’s also a good idea to carry an umbrella, and extra plastic bags to separate your wet and dry items.
Does TSA (Transportation Security Administration) allow luggage locks?
TSA allows passengers to keep their bags secure with an approved luggage lock, and I highly recommend using them. These locks are keyed alike, so TSA can access the bag for random searches without having to clip your lock. The approved luggage locks not only protect against items being stolen from your luggage in transit, but it also prevents the placement of illegal contraband inside your luggage.
As a travel specialist, I believe in safe and smart travel that prepares you for any inconveniences on the road. Stay tuned to our Fun Cruises For You blog for more travel tips and insights- happy traveling!
