There are so many ways to get around in Europe. If you travel by train, plane, or boat each will be a completely different experience. As a cruise specialist, I want to share the difference between traveling on an ocean cruise liner - the large ship that accommodates roughly 2,500 people- versus a river cruise- a smaller ship that accommodates roughly 150 people.

Many of the European waterways are not large enough to dock

ocean cruise ships, so there are advantages to traveling by smaller cruise ship. The on-board activities on the river cruise ship are considerably less, but there are still lounges for your entertainment. The ocean cruise liners will typically have more kids, because families prefer the on-board entertainment.

The rooms on the river cruise typically have free wireless internet access. Some river cruise lines also provide bicycles, so you can explore the cities when you dock. Another advantage of river cruising is the ship can dock right in the center of town while ocean cruise liners ships must dock outside the cities. Often the shore excursion price is included in your river cruise ticket- which provides coach and walking tours in the cities and villages along the river.

With most river and ocean cruises the food is plentiful and included in the sail ticket price. Some of the many river cruising destinations are the Rhine River through Holland, Switzerland, and Germany. There is also the Seine River in France, the Douro River from Portugal to Spain, and the Po River in Italy.

Another big advantage to river cruising is the calmer waterways, which will help anyone who is usually prone to becoming seasick.
